Quote of the Day™:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

(Found here.) *snerk* I almost feel sorry for Rand. Almost.

On the idolatry side, we have the most utterly fabulous Obama action figure. Be sure to scroll down to see the poses with the samurai sword and the light saber.

To even the scale, here's some snark.

Got a question ... on Dec 10th my mom purchased 125 gallons of Home Heating Oil...on Dec 29th all 125 is Gone...now according to my thinking , there is no way that mom * she kept the heater on 1 its lowest setting , could use that amount of oil, even with our older oil stove..

Any thoughts?

...so please forgive any T9 errors.

The plan originally was that my flight from San Jose (laid over from LA) was gonna arrive at 9 in Portland, wherein [info]chrisanthos was gonna pick me up. He called while I was on the first flight to say he wouldn't be able to pick me up. Not a problem at all, I can take public transportation. What is however becoming a potential problem is that the flight's departure time keeps getting pushed further back, and if it gets pushed too far, the busses may be no longer running when I arrive. Which, yikes.

On a more positive note, I had a lovely time in Los Angeles.

Subject: Seroquel, day 1

Got my scrip for Seroquel filled last night.  Took my first dose at 11:13 pm.

One of the side effects is drowsiness, which comes in handy for people with sleep issues (myself included).  To be fair, I DID have the best night's sleep I'd had in a long time.  But there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

I always have difficulty getting out of bed in the first place, an issue best left for another time.  The Seroquel actually made it worse.  I was in and out of sleep from about 9 am until I finally forced myself out of bed at 12:26, four minutes before  I had to leave for group.   All day, continuing to right now, I am TOO relaxed, almost to the point of wanting to go back to sleep.

This is the exact opposite effect of what I was looking for.  I already suffer from a general lack of energy and motivation.  I needed the pharmacological equivalent of a kick in the ass, not something that was going to bring me down further.  I have shit that needs to be done.

In consulting with the doc about this, I was informed (again) that this would take some getting used to, to give it a chance.  I am giving it a couple more days, but if I don't balance out here soon, I'm going to have to see what else I can try.

So, because my unemployment has been so screwed up, I may not be on much longer, I haven't been able to get caught up on my cable or my power bills, so if I abruptly vanish, the reason is that I no longer have internet nor power....just fucking great...

And before anyone asks, yeah, I had money set aside from such a case, but -that- got wiped out by the fact that, I thought my direct deposit had gone through when it should have, instead of 4 days later because my POS employers decided to predate the checks for the 25 instead of the 21 when we where given them

Five years ago, one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded occurred off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh Province. The quake triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean with waves up to a hundred feet tall. More than a quarter of a million people died, most of them in Indonesia. India was also hit. Now a publishing company based in the Southern city of Chennai is remembering what happened five years ago with a beautiful new handmade book.

Oww. My shoulder is still hurting quite a bit; it's not as bad as it was, but still. On the other hand, I admittedly haven't taken any painkillers yet today; I'm not sure to which extent I strictly need them anymore, and I obviously can't find out when I'm still taking them.

Physical therapy also contributed to an extent, of course, but that should just be a temporary thing.

Other than that, the physical therapist said that I'd be able to start taking ff the Gilchrist next week; just for an hour or so at a time, and I'll still have to wear it when going out and at night (for safety reasons), but still.

On the other hand, she also thinks hot baths are bad ight now, as they'll cause the blood vessels to widen and make swellings more likely. I wonder if I could get away with just keeping my shoulder out of the water (which, in practice, happens anyway; my tub isn't really big enough for me).

Subject: Guadalajara Day 1

OMG the lines! You'd think that a redeye leaving just before 11 pm would be rather empty but you would be very mistaken. The flight was PACKED! Unfortunately this meant waiting in gigantic lines for every step of the passage including checking in, going through security, waiting to get on the plane, waiting to get off the plane, waiting on the odd giant bus thing that went from the plane to the airport, waiting to get the passport stamped, and finally a very long line for customs after I picked up my luggage. Oh wait... there was also the line to get the parking lot ticket when I was picked up. *sigh*

Fortunately Guadalajara has been very nice. The downtown is very large and impressive, even with most of the museums and cultural things closed on Mondays. It looks like a cross between Europe and the USA, with a lot of old architecture. Around town there are a lot of US brands like Home Depot, Wall Mart, Burger King, tons of 7/11's and other stuff, but to be fair I saw some Mexican brands that are popping up in the USA. The roads are very different. There are no freeways through town. Instead there are multi-lane expressways with fewer stops. Driving here can be bad for you car though since there are random speed bumps that are not always painted in the middle of major streets.

Overall it has been a nice experience and I am looking forward to next week. Photos to come soon.
